Dorothy A. Hammond is currrently a Bioinformatics PhD student at the Institute of Bioinformatics, University of Georgia. An Epidemiologist by training from the Texas A & M School of Rural Public Health (2006).
My interest in bioinformatics generated from observing callous mortality caused by preventable diseases in vulnerable populations, simply due to the lack of information. This general area of interest is nothing new, however only a few research focuses on synchronize of biological information for predicting biologically pertinent problems and solutions. Currently, I am working on threading-based membrane protein structure prediction with my advisor Dr. Ying Xu and under direct supervision of the structural bioinformatics group leader Dr. Huling Chen. Proteins are the most important aspects of disease control and prevention, if you know what I mean.
I love the study of bioinformatics for a number of reasons. One because it is challenging and two because it is interdisciplinary. For these two reasons, one needs to be versatile to be successful in this field. And, versatility is my middle name.
Some of my favorite things to do during my leisure is to go rock climbing, swimming, and ballroom dancing and I also love story telling. Country and gospel music is where you will find my radio locked on 24/7. My favorite people to talk to are children and the elderly. Children because they have a pure soul and the elderly because they have experiences that I want to learn from. You may click on the story link to read some of the stories.
